A LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) manages samples, tests and workflows; an ELN (Electronic Lab Notebook) captures experimental notes and protocols; an SDMS (Scientific Data Management System) stores and indexes instrument data files. Most molecular genetics and pathology labs don't need all three as separate products — they need the case, sample, panel and variant workflow tracked reliably, with instrument and EMR data connected to it.
